MLK Day Parade 2024

Every year CAFE and our labor and community allies join together to celebrate Dr. King in the annual Charleston MLK Day Parade. The parade is a time for us to remember and elevate Dr. King’s commitment to the labor movement and to recommit ourselves to his vision. This year CAFE was joined by members of the Charleston Central Labor Council, SC Poor People’s Campaign, Charleston DSA, and many more.

CAFE shares the commitment that ALL labor has dignity. That what makes a job menial is the lack of adequate wages and a lack of respect. Dr. King said as much when he shared this quote during the Memphis Sanitation Strike…

You are demanding that this city will respect the dignity of labor. So often we overlook the work and the significance of those who are not in professional jobs, of those who are not in the so-called big jobs. But let me say to you tonight that whenever you are engaged in work that serves humanity and is for the building of humanity, it has dignity and it has worth.
